Nena is a German singer-songwriter and actress best known for her international hit single "99 Luftballons" ("99 Red Balloons"), which became a worldwide sensation in the 1980s. Born Gabriele Susanne Kerner on March 24, 1960, in Hagen, West Germany, Nena rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the band also named Nena, which she formed in 1982.

The song "99 Luftballons", released in 1983, tells the story of 99 balloons floating into the sky and being mistaken for enemy aircraft, triggering a chain reaction of military responses and ultimately leading to a devastating war.
