Facts about Flotsam & Jetsam
Flotsam & Jetsam is an American thrash metal band formed in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1981. The band's name was inspired by a chapter title in J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Two Towers", and they quickly gained attention in the metal scene for their aggressive sound and technically proficient musicianship.
The original lineup of Flotsam & Jetsam featured Eric A.K. (vocals), Edward Carlson and Michael Gilbert (guitars), Jason Newsted (bass), and Kelly David-Smith (drums). Notably, Newsted later joined Metallica as their bassist in 1986, after the release of Flotsam & Jetsam's debut album.
Flotsam & Jetsam released their self-titled debut album in 1986, which showcased their intense speed and intricate guitar work. However, it was their second album, "No Place for Disgrace" (1988), that solidified their reputation in the thrash metal scene, featuring tracks like "Hammerhead" and the title track.
Over the years, Flotsam & Jetsam experienced numerous lineup changes, with Eric A.K. being the only consistent member throughout the band's history. Despite these changes, they continued to release albums and tour, maintaining a dedicated fan base drawn to their energetic live performances and hard-hitting music.
Throughout their career, Flotsam & Jetsam released several albums that received critical acclaim within the metal community, including "Cuatro" (1992), "Drift" (1995), and "The End of Chaos" (2019). They are considered one of the influential bands in the thrash metal genre, contributing to its evolution and maintaining a loyal following over the decades.
