Cesária Évora

Cesária Évora, often referred to as the "Barefoot Diva", was born on August 27, 1941, in Mindelo, on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente. She grew up in a musical family and began singing in bars and restaurants at a young age, captivating audiences with her soulful voice.

Évora gained international recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s for her unique interpretation of Cape Verdean traditional music, particularly the melancholic genre known as morna. Her deep, emotive vocals, combined with the rhythms of African, Portuguese, and Brazilian influences, created a distinctive sound that resonated with listeners worldwide.

One of Évora's most iconic albums, "Miss Perfumado", released in 1992, catapulted her to global fame. The album featured the hit single "Sodade", which became synonymous with her name and introduced her music to a broader audience. "Miss Perfumado" went on to sell over 300,000 copies internationally, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards.

Despite her late success, Évora's rise to fame was marked by struggles and setbacks. She faced hardship early in life, including poverty and the loss of both parents at a young age. Additionally, she battled alcoholism throughout her career, a struggle she openly acknowledged and addressed in her music.
